Anders Bengtsson was born in 1954 in Gothenburg, Sweden. He became an anesthesiologist in 1987 and started as a staff member at the Department of Anesthesiology & Intensive Care at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. From 1990-1995 he was Head of the Department of Anesthesiology & Intensive Care at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. He was visiting Professor at the Department of Anesthesiology, Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon, in 1996-1997. At this moment he is Professor of Anesthesiology at the Department of Anesthesiology & Intensive Care, Sahlgrenska University Hospital/Östra. His major research interests are inflammation in trauma major surgery and extracorporeal circulation. The role of activation of the complement cascade and the formation of pro-inflammatory cytokines in clinical situations has been the focus of his research.
